The puzzles are also very well thought-out. This game does not hold your hand, and it rewards you for really thinking and solving the challenges presented. The world-building adds to the atmosphere with the scattered notes you find throughout your journey, enhancing the already interesting plot. The soundtrack by Mikko Tarmia is good as usual, with some tracks reminding me of Amnesia, since it is all made by the same composer. We can also notice a rudimentary sanity system as your view distorts and you get scared when looking at enemies.
The enemies themselves were a bit lackluster. I did not mind this, as the plot was good and the environment was interesting, but having mostly dogs as enemies was not very scary, and they were easily killable. This approach by Frictional Games, similarly to Amnesia, generates a great ambience where the player becomes really immersed in the story. There are only mutated animals as enemies here, no ghosts or scary monsters, and you can kill the mutant dog and spider.
Puzzle-wise, you rely on your environment and objects with physics, you can grab and place them like in their later games, Amnesia.
Like in some puzzles, you have to push and stack items to continue. Some notes also provide the clues to the puzzles you must solve. Reading the dozens of bland technical documents and occasional mad scribblings can prove to be a chore that is unfortunately necessary for progression. Same goes for a few thrilling chase sequences which stumble under their lack of proper conveyance and desire to place several simple puzzles which require the player to think on their feet…although more likely die repeatedly until the chase stops being scary and starts feeling mechanical and basic.
The mine that Phillip so recklessly flings himself into has a great air of mystery about it and reading through the various notes and hearing the ramblings of Red only helps increase your own uneasy need to delve deeper into the mystery.
