It also has a pretty good selection of various exercises that you can work on to get a feel for how to integrate shadow and light into your own artwork. While it mostly emphasizes pencil work as that’s the easiest for beginners , you can easily transfer the knowledge over to tonal values in pen hatching or painting.
A good, solid book for any kind of artist that uses a pen, brush or pencil. Good for blenders in color pencil, too, even though it’s not in color. You just transfer the basic concept to your preferred medium.
This is a very nice reference to light and dark explanation. Dry reading but accurate. Worth the money helped me improve. Very easy to understand and fun to do. I ordered this book hoping for a detailed insight on light and shade along with a little history and information regarding chiaroscuro. While it is a good book if this is the 1st art book you’ve ever read and does have quite a few inspiring images, it is absolutely nothing detailed for light and shadow that you probably couldn’t find on Wikipedia.
It’ll take less than 30 minutes to read every page word for word. What can I say here. Giovanni Civardi is brilliant. I also have his Complete Guide to Drawing, which every would be artist should own.
If follow his instruction in this book and his Complete Guide to Drawing, you will improve your art immensley. Buy both of these books. This I still check out every now and then, I like to draw and this definitely helps the beginners out there , like me. This book really delves into the critical element called value light and darks. Knowledge of value is critical for all visual art. It is key to composition and this book does a good job of helping new artists achieve this understanding.
Not bad but there are numerous You Tube videos that surpass this text in the application of light and shade but you have do work at this and it is not always available, ergo, having a hardcopy for quick reference this can do in a pinch.

I have a number of the artist books, they provide a large number of drawings which you feel able to try to copy for yourself. The books are relatively inexpensive so try one! Having a variety of achievable examples is better than looking at masterpieces which seem utterly unobtainable.
Towards the end of his books he does show you what he is capable of and maybe what you could achieve with time. This is a real artists book with illustrations that are exquisite. From fruit to flowers to portraits. Many of the illustrations have been simplified to show light and shade which is so helpful when learning about tone etc.
